I Can't Find You (feat. Grace Bergere)

March 25, 20252 min read

Hello friends. It's been a minute! I'm really happy to release "I Can't Find You" into the world. This is my first real musical collaboration, featuring Grace Bergere on vocals. Grace did stacks and stacks of harmony, I'm so grateful for where a new voice allowed the song to go. Grace is a fantastic songwriter herself, and I encourage you to check out her music. I'm definitely a fan.

Need to send some love to my sister Tarah. She can always interpret the music, and translate it into art. I asked for some sketches on what the song made her think of. She sent a couple, and one of them had a face. And the eyes were striking. It was a very tiny drawing, really not meant to be the actual thing, but when I see that piece I'm looking for, it's done.

This song is about distance between people. Physical distance, emotional distance. The feeling of not being able to find someone. Someone you're hoping to be with, someone you're already with, someone who is across town, in another state, another country. They all apply. It's a meditation on all forms of distance. And the silver cord reference is talking about astral travel. It's the perspective of, we're so far apart, maybe if we leave our physical forms behind, we can ascend beyond our problems. While I believe that's possible, the impossible hope is the acknowledgment that massive insurmountable distance exists, and possibly could forever.

Lyrics

i know that you're there

but far enough away that if i yelled into the air

my voice would never carry past the distance barrier

so i sit here wide awake, alone

i wish you were here

close enough to me that if you whispered in my ear

your words would carry messages so quiet and sincere

we'd find a way to hide away alone

oh... another hill to climb

another day goes by

away from you

oh... lament the passing time

across the aching sky

i can't find you

search for me up there

hiding from the bitterness and floating in despair

a single silver cord extending miles in the air

tethered to the broken world below

the path ahead is clear

train your mind and learn to make your body disappear

join me at the boundary of the atmosphere

we'll cut the cord and leave the world below

oh... another hill to climb

another day goes by

away from you

oh... lament the passing time

across the aching sky

i can't find you

oh... to scale the mountainside

so many years gone by

and still i wonder

oh... to look you in the eyes

across the aching sky

i can't find you
